GUAREC
Oscar Wiggli  - Sounds in the Cavern

Texts contributed by: Hartmut von Tryller, Frank Hasselkus, Michel-R. Flechtner, Oscar Wiggli

A mysterious subterranean world, accessible to man only by technological means, and the immaterial world that generates dreams come together one night.
Can sounds be sent down into a gigantic cavern of more than 300 000 m3, filled with methane gas? How would sounds behave in methane gas held under 100 bar pressure? Such were the questions put by the sculptor and composer Oscar Wiggli in 1994 in Bochum (Germany) to the cavern expert Hartmut von Tryller, head of the SOCON company, a worldwide business specialized in cavern surveying.
Surprised and fascinated by the subject, the artist and the industrialist embarked on an experiment which might provide a few answers to these as well as other questions.
This recounts how their venture, which seemed so impossible at first, became feasible and was carried through in April 1998.

The sounds created by the experiment were used as material for several compositions published on CD under the title GUAREC. In the accompanying booklet, the composer writes about his work (Text by Hartmut von Tryller and Oscar Wiggli).
